West Berlin marked the 19th anniversary of the Communist-built Berlin wall Wednesday by laying wreaths to commemorate the 70 East Germans who have been killed trying to cross it to the West. The edifice has been described by Western politicians. and statesmen as "infamous" and "a wall of shame." It has been extended into 260 miles (420 km) of some of the world's most sophisticated border fortifications, running from the Baltic Sea to Czechoslovakia.
