Khmer Rouge exiles say Viets use new poison gas

August 13, 1980

At least 82 people were killed by Vietnamese forces using "a new type of poisonous gas," said the clandestine radio of the ousted Khmer Rouge government Monday. The report, monitored here, said the Vietnamese occupation forces fired gas shells into two villages in northern Oddar Meanchey Province, near the border with Thailand.

The report suggested the gas was the same as that mentioned in a recent report by the US State Department alleging that gas was supplied by the Soviet Union for use in Afghanistan, Laos, and Cambodia.
