Search for the Titanic gets started at 3 sites

August 8, 1980

Millionaire Jack Grimm, who is sponsoring a $3 million search for the ocean liner Titanic, says a team of filmmakers, scientists, and adventurers planned to set up equipment Thursday at three sites where the "unsinkable" 882-foot ship may rest in up to 12,000 feet of water. The next step will be to lower a "camera sled" into the murky depths to relay computer-enhanced images of the targets.

The crew has been searching a 100-square-mile area 95 miles south of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland since mid-July. They plan to locate the Titanic this summer and return next July to retrieve artifacts.
