South Korea turns away 'rights' investigators

South Korea refused entry to human rights investigators seeking to check reports of alleged torture of political prisoners and mass arrests, Amnesty International said Tuesday.The investigators wanted to discuss with government officials the treatment of hundreds of prisoners allegedly held incommunicado, including opposition leader Kim Dae Jung.

MR. Kim is being tried on charges including conspiracy and faces a possible death sentence. Over 1,000 other people may also have been arrested on political grounds in recent months, Amnesty said.
