Hussein: Mideast faces disaster if peace lags

August 4, 1980

A tremendous disaster will befall the Middle East without progress in establishing a lasting peace, Jordan's King Hussein said in a U.S. News & World Report interview published Sunday. He said any solution to the impasse in the peace talks must come through the United Nations.

The Carter administration's Middle East strategy has really only dealt with the Egyptian-Israeli aspect of the problem, he said, adding that the problem is in Palestine -- "in the occupied West Bank, in Gaza, more importantly in Jerusalem."

He also says he will visit Moscow in October and wants to diversify Jordan's sources of military supplies.
