August 1, 1980

Ten servicemen and a civilian were shot in Evin Prison Thursday after a Revolutionary Court condemned them to death for taking part in the coup d'etat foiled in June. So far, 36 convicted conspirators, most of them members of the armed forces, have been executed for allegedly attempting to topple Iran's Islamic republic and restore to power Shahpour Bakhtiar, the last prime minister to serve under the late Shah.More than 250 people accused of involvement in the attempted coup are still believed to be in detention.

Meanwhile, in their first statement since the death of the former Shah, the militant students holding 52 American hostages said Thursday his death would not alter Iran's position.
