Skip 'political' tax cut, AFL-CIO president urges

July 30, 1980

AFL-CIO president Lame Kirkland urged Congress Tuesday to reject a "politically motivated" tax cut and to channel government funds into programs to provide jobs and aid for the unemployed. Among his suggestions: more public-service jobs, increased funds for low- and moderate-income housing, federal aid for essential services in areas with high unemployment and revenue loss, and stronger unemployment insurance programs.
