3,000 Kentuckians due home after chemical spill

Some 3,000 residents were expected to return home today (July 28) after being evacuted Saturday following the derailment of a 37-car "chemical dispatch" train. The train bound from Memphis to Louisville derailed less than 100 yards from Main Street and exploded into flames. There were no major injuries reported, but a thick black cloud of smoke from burning tankers loaded with toxic chemicals was visible 10 miles away.

The daily train, which hauls primarily chemicals, derailed earlier this month near West Paducah in western Kentucky. In 1979, it derailed three times, prompting two evacuations.
