Namibia official may get new post

July 21, 1980

Dr. Gerrit Viljoen, head of the powerful secret society of Afrikaners known as the Broederbond, may soon be changing hats, Monitor correspondent Gary Thatcher reports. Dr. Viljoen, currently the administrator general of Namibia (South-West Africa) is widely expected to be returning to South Africa before the end of the year. Speculation is that he will be offered either a post in South African Prime Minister P. W. Botha's Cabinet, or perhaps be named as deputy state president and head of an envisioned president's council to advise on a new constitution for the white-ruled republic.
