Iran says it's ready to try alleged coup conspirators

July 17, 1980

Iran sealed its borders for 48 hours Wednesday and President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr announced that alleged conspirators in a plot against the government would go on trial shortly. The travel ban, closing Iran's land, sea, and air frontiers, was imposed to prevent any of those accused of conspiracy from escaping abroad. The plot was uncovered last Thursday and about 320 people were arrested, many of them military personnel.
