India discusses purchase of Soviet MIGs

July 15, 1980

India has started talks with the Soviet Union for the purchase of the supersonic MIG-23 fighter aircraft, the United News of India reported Monday. The negotiations mark yet another step by India toward military dependence on Moscow, defense observers said. India's air strategy in the 1980s is envisioned to deploy MIG-21s for air defense, MIG-23s to support ground troops within 90 miles of the border, and Jaguar aircraft for striking deep into enemy territory.
