Sandblasting is only way to clean stucco

July 11, 1980

Q. Is there any way of stripping paint from stucco other than sandblasting? Neither a reputable paint store nor a painter know of any such remover. Do you? F. F. Carothers Scarsdale, N.Y.

A. Unless the paint on the stucco is flaking considerably the only effective way that we know to remove it is by sandblasting. If the flaking is excessive, a high-pressure water-blasting unit might take off a portion of the paint.

Of course, with the porous surface of the stucco, the effectiveness of water blasting may be marginal.
