The heat wave that has scorched the South and Southwest for almost three weeks spread Thursday as far north as Illinois, where heat was blamed for four deaths, pushing the nationwide total to 263. Temperatures in St. Louis have been as high as 102 degrees, compared with a normal high of 88.
