Campaign Roundup (5)

"Mo" Udall says he thinks his "old friend," John Anderson, will "reassess" if by Oct. 1 he becomes convinced his candidacy will elect Ronald Reagan. "Right now," says Rep. Morris Udall (D) of Arizona, "John thinks he can go all the way. But next fall he might well retreat to a neutral corner if he decides he cannot be elected."

Udall also said this of Illinois Republican Anderson's politics:

"When John came to Congress he mainly reflected the rural, conservative area from where he came. But he has shown a capacity to grow, to learn.

"Now he has become a moderate kind of Republican -- good on civil rights and on international issues. He is out of the tradition of Saltonstall, Case, and Javits."
