French-Spanish dispute causes huge traffic jam

June 19, 1980

Spanish and French riot police were on standby along their border Wednesday because of a dispute that threatened to halt road traffic along the whole length of the frontier. Lines of trucks and cars, many of them carrying vacationers, stretched up to five miles as Spanish truck drivers and French farmers confronted each other from truck blockades on their respective sides of the border. Spanish drivers are protesting attacks on their vehicles by French farmers, who, in turn, are angry about cheap agricultural imports from Spain.
