Weed arrangement

June 18, 1980

Once tidy with red geraniums the triangular base of a signpole in front of a deserted filling station has been taken over by weeds. But what weeds! Who knows better about flower arranging than Queen Anne's lace? Elegant white flowerheads nod with royal graciousness to unseeing passersby. A stiff clump of purple thistle stands guard beside its queen bristling each leaf/flower with truculant importance. Cornflowers must be the maids of honor dressed in the rarest blue to be found in earth/heaven. Humbly bowing stalks of timothy grass fill out the rest of this regal arrangement of weeds. Man is a water building/abandoning as though earth were infinite space. But nature is at once generous/thrifty utilizing any unused cranny with beautiful abundance.
