After a peaceful but uncompromising chat at the White House Thursday, nothing much has changed between the two major Democrats. Carter still won't debate, and Kennedy still won't give up his party-rending challenge.
Among the latest olive branches extended to the Kennedy camp was the announcing of US Rep. Morris Udall of Arizona as keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention. Udall is a Kennedy backer who ran against Carter in the 1976 primaries.
Party chairman and Carter supporter John White interpreted the meeting Thursday as a sign of unity to come. If not, he warned, it could mean a repeat of 1968, when Richard Nixon profited from a divided Democratic Party and won the presidency.
