United States Steel Corporation has put about 7,000 nonunion and nonmanagement personnel throughout the country on four-day workweeks to reduce costs, a spokesman said Wednesday. The move follows 17,000 production employee layoffs made by the company nationwide. Meanwhile, layoffs in the industry, which now total about 44,000 may exceed 72,000, industry analyst Eugene Frank said.
