Protected forest

May 29, 1980

A our intrusion, gentle deer express no evidence of fear, but stand at peace as we appear through silence, dim and deep. (In such a virgin forest might we glimpse a unicorn, or sight an ancient castle on some height, or leprechauns asleep.) While miles away a roaring stream of traffic flows, and cities teem with people pressing toward the gleam of glass and stone, this sweep of leafy, layered history collected here waits timelessly -- a dreaming place, untouched, where we find centuries to keep.
