Pay increases expected in data industry

May 28, 1980

Data-processing people can expect average pay increases of 9.1 percent this year, compared with an average raise of 8.7 percent in 1979, according to a computer-industry survey by Datamation magazine. In 1978 data processors had an average 7.8 percent salary improvement.

Salaries in entry-level positions range from $10,000 to $17,000, according to the survey.

With a shortage of experienced programmers, however, benefits are becoming increasingly important, the magazine adds. Besides increased salary, prospective employees are looking at such fringes as paid health insurance, dental plans, life insurance, opportunities for further schooling, and living conditions.
