New Hampshire thwarts occupation of nuclear site

May 27, 1980

Some 1,500 antinuclear protesters were thwarted in their attempts over the Memorial Day weekend to halt construction of the controversial $3.1 billion nuclear power plant here, Monitor correspondent Randy Shipp reports. A National Guard batallion and state police from five New England states used clubs, fire hoses, guard dogs, mace, and pepper fog to prevent the occupation organized by the Coalition for Direct Action at Seabrook. There have been only a small number of injuries -- eight as of Sunday, security forces seemed determined to use as little force as necessary in protecting the plant from assault. At least 33 demonstrators have been arrested.
