May 21, 1980

Two Soviet helicopters attacked an Iranian village Tuesday, killing at least one person, Iran's Pars News Agency said. Muhammad Towlcati, governor of the Bakhezr district of Khorasan Province, told Pars Iranian troops in the border post of Chah-Lhalgheh had opened fire on the helicopters as they violated Iranian territory. He said the copters dropped more than 1,000 shells into a residential area, damaging several homes; another 2,000 shells were fired 600 feet away. There was no immediate comment from the Iranian or Soviet governments.
