Mexico courts Europe in an oil supply deal

May 15, 1980

President Jose Lopez Portillo begins a 12-day tour Friday to France, West Germany, Sweden, and Canada to bargain Mexico's huge oil reserves in exchange for nuclear and mining technology, agricultural products, and coal. Mexico has already signed a deal with France to supply 100,000 barrels of oil a day this year. It has also agreed in principle to supply Canada with up to 100,000 barrels a day by next year.
