British workers called on to stay away for a day

May 14, 1980

Britain's labor unions have called on 12 million workers to stay away from their jobs today (May 14) in a one-day protest action, but according to an opinion poll, 73 percent of union members oppose the move. The "day of action "is aimed at protesting the economic policies of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Party government, her cuts in public spending, and her legislation aimed at curbing the power of trade unions. Mrs. Thatcher called on British workers Tuesday to stay at their jobs.
