Previous collision in Tampa Bay cited

May 12, 1980

Pilot John Lerro, whose 608-foot freighter Summit Venture rammed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay last Friday, struck the same interstate span Feb. 20, 1980, the Coast Guard said. The state Board of Pilot Commissioners has launched an investigation of Mr. Lerro, and Gov. Robert Graham has ordered the Department of Professional Regulation to investigate the Tampa Bay pilots. At least 31 people were killed Friday when a section of the bridge collapsed after being struck by the freighter. No injuries resulted from the Feb. 20 incident.
