Million Attend papal rites in Zaire

May 5, 1980

Pope John Paul celebrated his first Mass in Africa Sunday before a million worshippers on the third day of his visit to Zaire. He also ordained nine African bishops and told them that the Roman Catholic Church stood for justice and sought to defend the poor and oppressed in Africa and the world. The Pope's six-nation African tour will take him later to the Congo, Kenya, Ghana, Upper Volta, and the Ivory Coast.
