Canada Cup canceled

An Olympic boycott is not the only sports-related backlash the Soviet Union will feel as a protest to its presence in Afghanistan. The NHL Players' Association, the players' union, has successfully lobbied for the cancellation of the six-nation Canada Cup tournament, scheduled for September.

The soviets were to receive $1 million for participating in the two-week competition, which would have seen them meet all-star squads from Canada, finland, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, and the United states.
