1,000 Salvadorans killed this year, church says

April 29, 1980

Political violence here has claimed the lives of 1,002 people between Jan. 1 and April 15, Roman Catholic church officials said Monday. Most of the victims -- mostly poor peasants -- were killed in clashes with government forces. Another 29 peasants were killed late Saturday in search-and-destroy missions and accompanying house-to-house searches launched by government forces in three separate Salvadoran towns.
