Japan agrees to sanctions to spur hostages' release

April 25, 1980

Japan decided Thursday to impose diplomatic and economic sanctions against Iran in an effort to gain release of the American hostages in Tehran -- joining the nine-nation European Community and Canada in the move. Japan will trim its embassy staff in Iran; reintroduce visa issuance for Iranian nationals entering Japan; and curtail further export trade. Japan did not announce plans for a total trade embargo with Iran.
