Gromyko going to France to blunt US initiatives

April 18, 1980

Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei A. Gromyko will visit France next week for meetings in which he is expected to urge the French government to reject US initiatives on world issues. Senior Western diplomats expect him to ask French leaders to reject President Carter's call for a boycott of the Moscow Olympics and sanctions against Iran. On the Olympic issue, Mr. Gromyko is expected to play on fear, already voiced by French officials, that a widely observed boycott would only heighten international tensions.
