Libya, Algeria to ban oil for nations backing Israel

April 15, 1980

Libya and Algeria have agreed in principle to impose an oil and gas sales ban on countries that actively support Israel, a Libyan spokesman said. The Libyan leader, Muammar al-Qaddafi, and Algerian President Chadli Benjedid Monday were expected to work out details of the embargo, which would mainly affect the United States and some European countries. The two heads of state are taking part in a summit meeting of five Arab nations.
