European envoys leave Iran for hostage talks

April 15, 1980

Ambassadors from Britain, Denmark, Italy, and the Netherlands left Tehran Monday and returned to their capitals for consultation about the US Embassy hostage crisis. Ambassadors from France and Belgium, with plans to leave with the others, were held up by plane cancellations.

Irish Charge d' Affaires Peter Gunning said he would go to Dublin today (April 15). West German Ambassador Gerhard Ritzel, detained with health problems, will probably go home next weekend, a spokesman said. Japanese Ambassador Tsutomu Wada is expected to leave soon.
