Togo President seeking new cease-fire in Chad

April 7, 1980

Togolese President Gnassingbe Eyadema is here trying to mediate a cease-fire between factions fighting for control of the Chad capital. General Eyadema met one faction leader, President Goukouni Oueiddei, Saturday as the guns of two civil-war armies fell silent after two weeks of fighting. Next he expects to meet Defense Minister Hissene Habre, leader of the opposing faction. At least 800 people have been killed and 2,000 wounded in the current fighting.
