New York transit accord not imminent, official says

Walter Gellhorn, chairman of New York State's special three-member mediation panel, said a settlement of the subway and bus workers strike here is not imminent, Monitor correspondent Ward Morehouse III reports.

Speaking to reporters before talks between the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the striking unions broke off Thursday, Mr. Gellhorn explained that "union positions have hardened." But he said he was still hopeful that talks would resume over the Easter holiday weekend.
