Export up, imports down -- Canadian surplus rises

April 3, 1980

Canada's trade surplus jumped to $815 million in February, the largest monthly surplus in more than a year, compared with a $317 million surplus in January. Exports rose a seasonally adjusted 4.3 percent after dropping slightly in January, largely because of increased sales of ores, lumber, and wheat. Imports fell 4.2 percent after a 5.8 percent increase in January, with an increase in oil imports offset by a big drop in purchases of cars and trucks and metals.
