N.J. guard charged in jail takeover incident

March 27, 1980

An Essex County Jail guard was charged Wednesday with smuggling a pistol to inmates who used the weapon to shoot a guard, take five hostages, and hold the prison for 16 hours. Superior Court Judge Nicholas Scalera ordered corrections officer John Belcher held until his lawyer, a public defender, could file a motion for bail. About four hours before Mr. Belcher's court appearance the prisoners, housed in the jail's violent crime section, surrendered at the end of a tense round of negotiations with county officials.
