South Korea units sink Northern spy boat

March 26, 1980

South Korean military units sank an armed North Korean spy boat Tuesday less than 48 hours after repulsing frogmen infiltrating from the north, the Defense Ministry said. South Korean Navy and Air Force units sank the spy boat as it neared a southeastern industrial and military base. An unknown number of Northerners perished, the ministry said.

Four South Koreans were killed, one was injured, and one was listed missing after the incident.

It was the second clash between the two Koreans since early Sunday when three armed North Korean frogmen were shot and killed as they crossed to the south at a point less than 15 miles from Seoul.
