'One-party election' ordered in Uganda

March 26, 1980

Ugandan President Godfrey Binaisa said Tuesday all political parties in Uganda are "gone forever" and the country would hold elections soon as a one-party state. In a speech marking the first anniversary of the Ugandan National Liberation Front, formed to overthrow dictator Idi Amin last year, Mr. Binaisa gave no date for the elections but said they would be held ahead of schedule. The original date for the voting was June 3, 1981, but there is widespread speculation the national elections will take place in either November or December of this year.
