Japan explores increase in defense payments

Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira instructed his government Monday to study how much it could increase its share of costs for stationing US troops in Japan. Foreign Minister Saburo Okita told a press conference the United States was seeking a steady and significant increase in Japan's defense effort. At present Japan pays about $1 billion a year to help maintain 46,000 troops in Japan.
