British defense chief arrives in China

March 24, 1980

British Defense Minister Francis Pym arrived in Peking Sunday for a six-day visit during which he will attempt to push forward talks on the sale of British military hardware to China, British sources said. Mr. Pym was greeted at Peking Airport by a full military guard of honor and Chinese Vice-Premier Wang Zhen, with whom he is to begin negotiations Monday. Mr. Pym is the first British defense minister to visit the People's Republic, and only the second from the Western world. US Defense Secretary Harold Brown was here in January.
