Staying and Watching

March 20, 1980

Rather than wander seeking love beyond long aeons' further side, I stay and watch the things that move. I keep my sill an open trove of seed, my doors and windows wide. Rather than wander seeking love in strange terrain, rather than leave a known nest for exotic need, I stay and watch the things that move: low shadow-flights diving, hovering liberal wings over my head. Rather than wander seeking love at large, finding some plume for proof, cast-off for creature: unwaranteed I stay and watch the things that move here in this province where I live my search: my lintel time, my stead. Rather than wander -- seeking love I stay. And watch the things that move.
