Cleveland school officials struggle to initiate busing

March 18, 1980

Cleveland school officials struggled monday to implement of court-ordered desegregation program. In addition to white resistance and a shortage of school buses, they had to cope with the US Supreme Court's last-minute rejection in Washington of the school board's appeal of the program. The high court decided over the objections of three justices to leave intact court orders for busing about 11,000 junior high school students in Ohio's largest school district.

The court's rejection came as no surprise in light of similar rulings last July upholding desegration in Columbus and Dayton schools.
