Violence disrupts Kabul

Shooting was reported in Kabul Monday, and most shops remained closed to protest the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. Diplomats said that there seemed to be little sign that civilian government was functioning and that there were few officials at work in ministries.

The diplomats, contacted by telephone from Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel, which foreign correspondents are not allowed to leave, said the capital was generally quiet, although some shooting had been heard about 8 a.m., local time.

Radio Kabul broadcasts monitored in Islamabad, Pakistan, first reported rioting, looting, and gunfire in various parts of the capital Monday in a fourth day of protests against the government, but that night it said the outbreak had stopped and life in Kabul had returned to normal.
