Explosion wrecks plant of Rhodesian newspaper

February 25, 1980

Two men died when an explosion wrecked the offices and printing plant of a Roman Catholic weekly newspaper in the Rhodesian city of Gwelo Sunday, police said. The explosion tore apart the single-story building of Mambo Press, which publishes the weekly newspaper Moto.

A bogus edition of Moto was distributed in several Rhodesian town Saturday, carrying a front-page story denigrating Robert Mugabe, the Marxist-leaning guerrilla leader who is a top contender in this week's pre-independence election. Moto, which began publishing again last December after being banned for several years, has leaned toward Mr. Mugabe in its editorial policy since re-emerging.
