Government employees on stike in Kabul

February 25, 1980

Civil servants in Kabul are on strike to protest the Soviet presence in Afghanistan, an insurgent spokesman said Sunday. The spokesman for the Jamiat Islami, one of several groups opposing the Communist government in Kabul, said that most government employees had walked out and that the strike would continue indefinitely.

He denied Afghan government claims that foreign countries were behind the street protests in Kabul. Pakistan has rejected an allegation that Pakistani nationals were involved.
