The Turkish government placed two more provinces under martial law Wednesday, including the Aegean province of Izmir, where troops and left-wing protesters clashed last week. The Cabinet of Premier Suleyman Demirel was acting on a recommendation Tuesday from the National Security Council, the country's highest advisory body, which called for martial law in Izmir and southern Hatay Province , on the Syrian border.
