Meetings by Mugabe side barred in central Rhodesia

February 15, 1980

Continuing his crackdown on Robert Mugabe's followers, the British governor, Lord Soames, barred the nationalist leader and his supporters Thursday from holding public meetings in areas of central Rhodesia.

British sources announced the ban shortly after Rhodesian police arrested three of Mugabe's election candidates in Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front in the southern mining town of Shabani, accusing them of sheltering renegade guerrillas.
