African body urges Britain to bolster Rhodesia vote

February 14, 1980

The Organization of African Unity called on all member states Wednesday to use their influence on Britain to ensure free and fair elections in Rhodesia. A resolution approved by the 49-nation body's Council of Ministers also urged the international community to join black Africa in efforts to ensure that Britain carry out the London peace settlement. The ministers have said Britain has repeatedly violated the agreement in its administration of Rhodesia.

The organization is giving $10 million to two Rhodesian nationalist leaders, Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo, to finance their election campaigns.
