Red Brigades assassinate prominent Italian judge

February 13, 1980

Red Brigades urban guerrillas shot and killed a prominent judge Tuesday in Italy's 12th political assassination of the year. Pope John Paul II called it "an inhuman, savage crime." Judge Vittorio Bachelet, a colleague of Aldo Moro, the assassinated premier, was attacked just outside the political science building at the University of Rome, where a seminar on combating terrorism was being held.

Shortly after the killing, anonymous telephone callers told two Rome newspapers that the murder was carried out by the Red Brigades.
