Rhodesia cease-fire jolted by attack on jammed bus

February 5, 1980

The death toll rose to 16 Monday in a terrorist attack on a bus jammed with black civilians, the worst violence so far in the month-old Rhodesian cease-fire.

Another 76 people were injured, 30 of them seriously, when terrorists, who police said were members of Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army, opened fire on the bus with rockets and machine guns. The incident took place on the Salisbury-Umtali highway, 85 miles southeast of the capital.
